King, Mubarak Hold Talks

10 September 2006

His Majesty King Abdullah and Egyptian President Muhammad Hosni Mubarak stressed the importance of reviving the peace process and returning to negotiations that respect international resolutions and can guarantee Palestinian rights.

During the meeting, held in Amman, the King and Mubarak said a unified Arab position was crucial to supporting the Palestinian people and guaranteeing their rights in a settlement of the Palestinian issue, the core of conflict in the region.

The two leaders also reiterated their support of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) and its President Mahmoud Abbas to form a national unity government, saying that a national unity government would strengthen the Palestinian position in the peace process.

They also stressed that unilateral solutions have proven a failure in dealing with the region's issues.

The two leaders underlined the importance of continuing the international community's support to the Palestinian people and facilitating the flow of economic and humanitarian assistance to the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

On the Lebanese issue, the King and the Egyptian president highlighted the importance of preserving Lebanon's unity and sovereignty, stressing the two countries' support for the Lebanese people and their government in overcoming the impact of the Israeli aggression and rebuilding the country.

Concerning Iraq, the two leaders expressed support for efforts to restore security and stability and achieve national accord in the country through participation of all Iraqis in the political process.

King Abdullah and President Mubarak expressed satisfaction with bi-relations, emphasizing the importance of strengthening cooperation in all fields.

Their talks, which included a banquet lunch in President Mubarak's honor, were attended by a number of Jordanian and Egyptian senior officials. On his return to Egypt, the Egyptian president expressed his appreciation for the "fruitful consultations" with King Abdullah.
