His Majesty King Abdullah on Sunday urged the National Society for Consumer Protection (NSCP) to play a pivotal role in helping protecting consumers against the backdrop of the current tough economic conditions.

His Majesty told NSCP chairman Mohammad Obeidat that his society must maintain its task to protect citizens from price manipulation and ensure the quality and safety of consumer commodities, emphasising the society's role in spreading awareness amongst the public.

He also urged closer cooperation between the NSCP and the government to safeguard consumers' interests and rights through the speedy introduction of legislation to protect them.

Obeidat thanked the King for supporting the society's objectives and facilitating its task, which, he said, would galvanise members to do more in the service of consumers' rights. He told Jordan Television after the meeting that he updated the King on NSCP’s achievements and plans for the next years, commending the King's "relentless support and keen follow-up on issues of concern to the citizens."

"His Majesty voiced his backing for the society's activities, and we highly commend his interest and keenness on supporting all effort and initiatives related to improving citizens' living conditions," Obeidat told Jordan Television.

Established in 1989 as a non-governmental organisation, the NSCP seeks to raise public awareness on consumers’ protection, identify consumer problems, combat fraud and price hikes and prevent monopoly.
