His Majesty King Abdullah II discussed with Israeli President Shimon Peres ways to overcome obstacles facing the revival of the Palestinian-Israeli peace negotiations on the basis of the two-state solution, in accordance with international resolutions, ensuring the restoration of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, as well as in line with the agreed-upon terms of reference, in particular the Arab Peace Initiative.

President Peres left Amman after a short visit to the Kingdom today.

His Majesty’s meeting with Peres came in follow-up to the King's visit to Ramallah last week and in the context of efforts that His Majesty is leading in support of the Palestinian people and to alleviate their suffering.

During the meeting, His Majesty stressed the need to stop Israeli unilateral actions, particularly all forms of settlement, which pose a major and real obstacle to peace efforts, and to refrain from any measures that could change the features of Jerusalem, or affect Islamic and Christian holy places in the Holy City.

The King emphasised that the end of the decades-long Palestinian-Israeli conflict can only be achieved through resolving all final-status issues, foremost of which are refugees, borders and Jerusalem, leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital, living side by side with Israel in peace and security.

The Israeli President elaborated during the meeting on the efforts that Israel could initiate in the near future to rebuild trust with the Palestinian Authority.
